Theme/Topic

Historical figure Hua Mulan (历史人物花木兰)

Unit Overview

You have learned about historical figures from different text sources, such as stories, drama and animations.  Each text source may highlight different aspects of a certain figure.  In this unit, you will learn about Hua Mulan, a Chinese historical figure.  In particular, you will explore how Hua Mulan is portrayed in a story, a play and a Disney movie.  You will discuss with your classmates the cultural and social values reflected in the story of Hua Mulan in each source, and how each source delivers specific perspectives.  At the end of this unit, you will present Hua Mulan from a specific perspective.       

Enduring Understanding

A story written about a historical figure reflects the perspectives of the narrator/writer.

Essential Questions

  1. What are the cultural and social values that an author chooses to highlight in his/her story about a historical figure?
  2. How do authors use different sources/genres (i.e., story, film, play) to present a historical figure?
